Breaking up with the gym after 21 years

I've got a confession to make.

I cheated on the gym.

Specifically 24-Hour Fitness.

After 21 years and 3 different gym locations. It's over.

Don't get the wrong idea. I'm still working out. It's just in my garage.

No more 4am alarms.

No more 25-minute "commute" to the gym before breakfast.

I was a bit worried about quitting the gym. It was weird because it really felt like I was breaking up with someone.

Definitely one of those "It's not me, it's you" situations.

But after getting some gear for the garage, working out from home just makes more sense.

I'm saving time and money, and getting more sleep.

It's great!

The one thing I miss is a bit is the community at the gym, but we didn't do much talking at 5am anyway.

GARAGE GYM GEAR

So what's in my garage?

I've got a few key pieces of gear.

  • Squat rack from PRX
  • Bench from GIANT
  • Various plates from PRX and GIANT
  • Adjustable dumbbells from PowerBlock

It's been a few months now and things are going well.

If anything, I'm even more consistent and it's easier to fit a workout into our busy family schedule.

For workout programming, I recommend anything by MindPump.

I've used their stuff (and listened to their top rated podcast) for several years, and it's helped me stay fit without getting hurt.

NUGGET OF WISDOM

“Genius ideas are just stupid ideas that worked.”
Ryland Grace, Project Hail Mary

If you haven't read the book or seen the movie, Project Hail Mary is worth your time. I've watched it at least 3 times now and read the book.

I don't remember the exact wording of this quote, but it's a great reminder that genius ideas don't start out as genius ideas.

Sometimes you've gotta try something stupid and figure it out.

COMING SOON

Starting June 1, I'm doing a 30-day series highlighting dads.

It's gonna be called 30 Days of Dads.

Very creative, right? 😜

Each day will include tips, tricks, and dad jokes from a different dad.

I've already filled up half of the days, but I'm looking for more dads to contribute.

If you want to be featured, or you know a dad who should be featured, just REPLY to this email and let me know.

Move your body.
Clear your mind.
Repeat.

Keep up the good work!
